I'm not sure about this, but I'd think that on your '70 you could support under the transmission and release the shift rod coupling, then just pry the engine and transmission far enough to the rear to get clearance. You might get a little extra room by loosening the 4 bolts that hold the upper ends of the rear mount supports.
