My impression, quite possibly incorrect, is that this comes about as a result of abuse and improper engine cooling system assembly. Exhaust leaks and aftermarket exhausts make this worse. Except for Death Valley, our summers are just about as hot as yours. OTOH, my '69 came from SoCal and it's harness was shot. In that case, however, it had been badly abused.
