Yes, and no. They have exhaust systems that dump outside; modern RVs and buses use the same sort of system.

Fuel heaters are not without hazards (I had one ignite inappropriately in my Bus), but when properly installed, operated and maintained they are quite safe and effective. That said, the stock late Type 3 passive heat system is good enough for most climates, imho, unlike the Type 1/2 system.

I have always found the Type 1 system, if maintained properly of course, to be sufficient as well. The Type 4, however, really needs the heater booster that it came with as standard equipment. The heat exchangers don't put out enough to provide a comfortable environment.
