You should send them some feedback on this. They should know better. I assume 
this kit included the rod AND the circlips, so they had everything in their 
hands that they needed to know to realize this wasn't a winning combination.

I'd send them some feedback on that, too. They may be trying to get by with an 
inch size that is more easy to come by in the US.

Loctite makes a compound that will lock it in place. You just need to clean 
both pieces first and then apply just enough of the material to fill the gap. 
VW trannys generally run for at least 200k, so yours may not be as bad as you 
think. You're right, you DON'T want things rotating at the wrong joint.

The first time I did this job was on a friend's '65 bug in about 1970. I think 
he bought all his new parts at the dealer, but when we went to put them all 
together, the turned-down right end of the clutch shaft was too large to fit in 
that bushing. I had to turn it down on a lathe to match his old part. So it's 
always possible that you got a rogue part.
