According to him he swerved at the last second (was driving in heavy congestion and didn't see it sticking out until the last second), and thought he cleared it until he heard it hit. Yes he also got very lucky in that removing the sump, and replacing the strainer and cover fixed it. So far it hasn't been leaking, and he's been keeping an eye on it, as it was a new engine that went to Parma (it's about 3 years old now).
