Did you clean out the gauze in the sump too?  (Of course you did).
Does the engine seem particularly hot when it does this?  Could be the timing is
out - too advanced.

Auto idle is 950 +/- 50 rpm; that's high compared with some cars.  Check yours
is on spec, and go for the upper end.  It might do enough to keep it out most of
the time.

Another thought is the oil bypass piston - might that be sticking open and
reducing the pressure?  Not sure I've thought much about what that does -
bypasses the cooler maybe?
