Some people love 'em while others hate them. I admit that they are nice for carrying home the annual Christmas tree, but I've never used one other than for that. On some cars, and I don't know about ours specifically, they can have a rather large negative effect on gas mileage. These were all a made-in-USA VWoA product, dealer installed. I actually removed the one from the '73 that I'm restoring because I prefer the cleaner look. There were 2 different versions of these. The early one had the alum roof strips all separate and they each had to be screwed down individually. That meant lots of holes in the roof and lots of time to install it at the dealership. The later ones, like the one in this auction, have all the roof strips tied together with cross straps. On these, many fewer screws and holes are needed, but the finished look is more cluttered. I'm not sure when the changeover occurred.
