Hmmm, a '65 would have had drum brakes. Both the hose and the bleeder should be 
in the inside face of the backing plate. Do you mean that one is in front and 
one is in the rear? That sounds right.

Once the hoses were replaced the fluid should flow by gravity. Is it possible 
that you don't have any free play at the pedal?

Rebuild it now, coat the bore with silicone fluid when you assemble it. I use 
Dow-Corning Silicone 200 Fluid with a viscosity of 100,000 Centistokes.
