If I'm not mistaken, you shouldn't. If you look at the top side of the engine where it's mounted on the gearbox, you should see 2 17mm nuts. The right one is for the starter!!! I'm pretty sure my starter's bad, so I went to replace it, but the bentley doesn't mention not being able to get at that nut very easily. more info: I Began having trouble starting. would crank over then seemingly freeze up. Then later would simply run like normal. It's like the starter had rough spots it couldn't spin through. I recharcharged the battery, checked the battery before and during failed starting, it was 12.38V before and held 12V while the starter seemed to freeze up. Crossing over pins 30 and 50 on the starter the starter ran somewhat slow, and made rather rough noises while turning. [ but more like inside and less like the gear missing the flywheel? ] anyhow. I'm pretty sure it's the starter that's bad. so.. what do you have to do to get that bolt off? thanks. --fess ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
