Your latch MAY actually be fine. There is a small coil tension spring which is 
part of the latch assembly. These springs occasionally break and when that 
happens the doors will open on their own when you hit bumps, go around corners, 
etc.

While VW sold the springs as a separate part, you can just replace it with 
something you buy at the hardware store.

I just checked the parts list and it shows 3 different latch mechanisms: 1 up 
thru '66, one for '67, and one for '68 and later. It shows replacement springs 
only for the later 2 versions, so your situation may be different. If so, 
you're looking for a LHS replacement latch for '66 or earlier.
