I have one which I tried to fix. The cap is plated steel and this one rusted 
thru. I took it off and worked it over with solder and then tried to crimp the 
cap back on. I THINK I was successful, but I haven't actually tried it. The one 
thing you have going for you is that there is zero pressure under that cap.

I'm assuming that the valve & spring didn't get lost when your cap popped off. 
If the valve is gone, then the pump won't work right.
