This means that the voltage across every part of the ignition system increases, too. Eventually one of two things will happen. Either the high voltage will find an easier path to ground and arc there, or you will run into the voltage limit of your coil and you'll get no arc anywhere. Either way, the engine misfires and you lose power. You can even get a situation where the capacitve coupling between the wire and the surrounding metal parts is sufficient to soak up the voltage.
