Yesterday I installed the master cylinder and the feed lines from the reservoir to it. There were a couple of hard lines to connect between the hard lines coming from the reservoir, but I couldn't figure out how to get one of them installed, so I left it out and used a longer run of hose instead. It was too long and would have resulted in a couple of oddly looped flex line. I purchased the proper blue hose for this application, but the diameter was a bit large for the hard lines. I checked with my local FLAPS, the one that understands and supplies VWs, and that was the only size available. I used hose clamps to cinch the hose down to the hard lines, and they've held. I took Jim's advice and had a set of four cut-off hose ends welded up to act as caps for the hard lines nearest the wheels. This allowed me to pressurize and bleed the lines of gunk before installing the rebuilt units. I got a lot gunk out of the rear line, but was only able to do a gravity bleed. One of the caps leaked, so it's back to the muffler shop today to get it re-welded. I used a piece of clear hose and a crayon to plug that fitting for the time being! I cleaned up and polished the rod from the brake pedal into the master cylinder to keep it from abrading the rubber boot. I also greased the various components of the pedal cluster while I was there. I used PJ1 spray grease for this. It's motorcycle chain lube that sprays on thin, and dries to a grease. Great for getting into those tight spots. Just don't move anything until it thickens. It is so much easier with the gas tank removed, than laying on your back and reaching into a cramped area. Just like an engine, it's worth removing the tank if you have to do just about anything to the front end. I'm going to install a shut-off valve just for this purpose. Progress is being made!
