It looks like that is probably the case.  The EMPI 5 spokes are the 
worst one on the list as far as offset goes.

This buys you a whole 1.5" on diameter without giving up any width.  It 
might be enough to make a difference, but you wouldn't want to lower it 
another notch at the same time since you would be giving up everything 
you gained.  The smaller diameter tire will lower you another 3/4" 
though.
