Tell me it was an automatic.... I dont want to start worrying about the
standard in my 87 Golf!

Good idea, but the water will still get under the magnet.  I may be able to
get you some good quality Orange electrical tape :) RTV is probably best,
and will come off with gas but as you said... bit of a mess.

You need a nice, factory, STOCK, Gas heater!  Add yet another knob to your
dashboard and have some heat in the morning!  Yea... they are not meant to
really heat the whole car on a regular basis or work as a defroster but
since your periods of needing it in the winter will be limited this will
help you get through them and not freeze to death.
