For the most part, and certainly for the US and Canada, '68 was the last year 
for the swing axle. However, VW continued to make swing axle MT type 3s for 
some markets. I think the swing axle has a larger load capacity and is more 
suited for rough roads. 

Automatics were only supplied with IRS.

>From '66-on, however, they all used the same brake drums, hubs, and backing 
plates.
