Could it have been a porous (sp?) casting? This would be about the only thing
I could think of other than maybe the case was rusted / dissoloved there due
to water. I'm only mentioning that, due to the one oil cooler mounting ear
looking like something ate a chunk out of it. I've seen cases where they've been
ate, but usually it's in the sump area, and yours looks fine there.
