The electronic clocks have a pendulum - if things have got a bit stiff in there,
connecting a bit more voltage (ie charged second battery with the other engine
running) probably gave it enough to get it moving enough for the thing to
swing - a bit like helping a kid to get started on a swing.
Try a bit of regular rocking on the gutter one side - see if you can get that
pendulum swinging enough to start!  I wonder if some of those dead electronic
clocks would work with an extra AA battery put between the +12V and the clock +,
just to give them a fraction more kick.
