It's sometimes the connector at the other end of the shift rod, where it links to the gearbox. Look under the oval plate on the back end oif the tunnel underneath. There's a self-tapping screw that may be tightenable, but if the rubber has failed, you may as well replace it. I think the Type 2 has a similar one - maybe the bug too - though it's part 311 711 211 (all but the earliest) so I can't be sure. Anyone confirm that? Dave.
