OK to summarise the situation. Finished putting the carbs together and installed them on the engine along with all new fuel hose. Did a tune except for timing as mentioned, new points (49deg dwell) adjust valve clearance. Went for 10min drive at speeds from 20-50MPH, no problems. Put car in garage. Next day drive across the road to the petrol station (no problems), fill up. (The petrol station is no more than 2min drive from my garage door). Dive out, no power, hesitates. (Incidentally, I was on my way to Day of the Volkswagen, one of our biggest events of the year, so I was particularly unimpressed. How do cars know when you're going somewhere important?) As I was still so close to home, I limped the car back to the garage and left it idling. It idled well, it was only when it revved that the fluttering noise from the left carb occurs followed by the back fires. The back fires happened at least three times, with varying severity, during the 30secs or so I was revving it up and down. When I saw the flashes of flame in the throat of the carb, I shut it off to avoid any damage.
