It's most likely that the 2 small screws that attach the fan housing to the rear of the engine case have come loose. Fixing this can be done in the car, but it requires removal of quite a bit of stuff from the back of the engine before you can get to the loose parts. You may be able to verify this diagnosis by grabbing the 2 sides of the fan housing and seeing if you can move it with respect to the rest of the engine. If this is the problem, you MUST fix it before the loose parts wear thru and destroy more expensive parts. It's also possible that there is just something loose in the bottom of the pulley housing. You may be able to bend a wire to scrape under the pulley and pull rocks or generator belt bits out from under the pulley. Those you can get out rather easily, with just a little persistance. -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
