The oil bath air cleaner gets only about 1/2" of oil in it, so it should never appear "full." If it is truly empty, I agree that small amounts of driving/testing won't do significant damage. There is no sponge in the pressure sensor. The pressure sensor is a baseball sized object that hangs down from the underside of the deck to the left of the engine. It has a vacuum hose that connects to the engine; make sure that hose is actually connected on both ends. There is a kind of fiber filling in the upper half of the air cleaner. It needs no attention of any kind. The upper half should never be turned upside down at any time, for any reason. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
