 what width is the bigger question? and do you intend to keep the outward 
appearance of the arches the way it came from the factory? 8in can be done 
on the rear 6,s is better on the front 7in will fit but you will have some 
rub on the inner wing if you dont fit some form of limit stop on the front 
axle arms .

will you run adaptors from 4 bolt to porsche 5 or do you plan on custom 
drilled discs and drums?

it is better to get wheels with an et of 52 and space them out towards the 
wheel arch lips as much as you can typ3 cars originally came with wheels of 
45 et

17,s are definately do-able.
