hey guys... i don't get to visit much due to the way my work computer use is set up, but i wanted to drop a bombshell. i have a squareback that has stock FI on it now. granted i have 5 other type 3s with carbs, but i have one with FI and i am even attempting to live with it ;-p i wanted to give an update on the 74x90.5 GEX engine i inherited. some of you know that i tore the entire top end off the engine in Toby's garage in 2003 and found many items incorrect. cooling wasn't correct (type 1 under cylinder tins), rockers were mounted incorrectly, compression ratio was different on each half of the motor (different deck heights) and the 041 heads were actually 311 heads that GEX rebuilt and then stamped 041 over the 311. and the carbs were jetted incorrectly. this engine was a turnkey from GEX that the PO paid 4k dollars for. well the engine has a documented 13k miles on it now, and is need of a complete tear down. the end play is way off, it is leaking oil from everywhere, fuel comsuption went from 29mpg to 15mpg in the last 2 months and the engine is running 45F hotter at the heads than it was at 7k miles... i say all this to remind everyone of one thing... big glossy ads in and of themselves do not mean the seller is reputable. this is the 12 or 13th GEX engine i have dealt with over the years (3rd that has become mine) and everyone of them was built with a mixmatch of new/used parts, incorrect tolerances or both. i will be documenting the tear down to see just what else is wrong wiht the engine over the winter, so stay tuned... okay, now back to lurker mode.
