DavidS=> adding a dual carb setup. ... what do you think of => that and are there any sets in good condition, complete => with linkages etc around? Adding dual carbs to a single-carb motor can give you some additional performance, but I'd recommend preparing for more than bolting on the carbs. There is some system tuning involved to really get enough out of them to be worth the hassle. And I'm sure few here will disagree that dual carbs can be a hassle. The first hassle is getting them to fit into an early engine bay. VW knocked a couple of dents into the side panels to allow room to work on the dual carbs in later years. The parts you'll want are all available, although not real plentiful: 6V carbs w/21mm venturis, throttles, heat insulators, gaskets, single-port manifolds, manifold crush rings, linkage, bellcrank, air cleaner, air cleaner stand, air cleaner seals, wing nut, throttle cable, balance tube and seals, balance tube clamp, choke harness. You'll probably want to lean out the jets to match the capacity of your 1500 flattop motor to prevent overfueling. The early 1500 exhaust is too restrictive to move much more air than it is already, so you might want to consider upgrading to a 1500S or 1600 exhaust. That'll probably affect your heat system, but I haven't been there. You'll want to find a good manual covering dual carbs if you don't have one already. I like the Elfrink best for the illustrations. It's out of print. Then you'll prefer to find an old, preferably German air-cooled performance mechanic to set the system up. Pay him what he's worth, watch closely and listen carefully, 'cause what he knows isn't in the manual. In your place, I'd be looking first at a gentle massage of the system I already have in place. Careful tuning can make a big difference.
