This is why after nearly 300Kmi my tranny is moaning and groaning but NOT popping out of gear. I read early on not to rest your hand on the shifter... The tranny in my last square started popping out of first and wouldnt stay in reverse at only 140K... but the PO had a wife who was pretty uncoordinated. \ Keith
In my many years of rebuilding VW tranaxles, the usual cause is that the shift fork is worn, and the slider is not engaging all the way. This wears the gear on the shaft, and then it starts poppingt out of gear. I can look at the shfit fork wear in a VW trans and just about tell you the drivers habits. If 1st gear goes, the driver rests his/her hand on the shift lever at stop lights. If 3rd/4th goes first, the driver rests their hand on the shift lever going down the road. The Trans is designed and adjusted so that after it is in gear, leave the shifter alone.
