Thanks to all for sticking with me through my recent problems. My car is now running again! We all know that if a car won't run it's either no spark or no gas. At least part of the time over the last week I've had both problems simultaneously! It all began after I tuned up the car. With one distributor my car wouldn't accelrate, with another it wouldn't idle. I cleaned and relubed the advance weights and got the first one working nicely. I assumed everything was fine when I had that strange problem after spinning my wheels in the rain. The car would start to accelerate then the rpms would dive if I gave it any more gas. I limped it home and started trying to figure it out, asuming my problem was spark related again. This was my first mistake. I somehow killed my spark in all the parts swapping and it took me until yesyerday to get it happening again. I'm not sure what it was that was stopping it from getting through but it was not sparking at the plugs. Last night it was finally sparking at the plugs but still wouldn't run. I thouhgt I had probably run the car out of gas so put some in the tank and still nothing. You can't exactly dump gas down a side draft carb so I took the screws out and removed the top of it. The float chamber was empty. I poured gas in it and lo and behold the gas seemed to be running out as quickly as I could fil lit. There is a screw on teh bottom right hand side of the float chamber that had fallen out! This must have happened when I did the burnout. I pulled the carb, replaced the screw (it was still sitting there on the engine tin) and fired the car up. Still one distributor doesn't like to accelerate and the other is weird on idle. I guess I need to rebuild one or get it rebuilt but at least this is making sense again. It's been said before but this list is a godsend. Without the support here I imagine I would have given up on VWs some time ago.
