I just tried again. When I opened and closed the points manually I would get a flash but rarely. I tried grounding the wire and finally I'm getting a flash every time I open the points. I guess I wasn't grounding the wire well enough before. The cap is a bosch T3 unit, the button is sticking down and I do only get Bosch tune up parts, thanks to past advice from the list. I don't have a helper right now so I can't do the other test. If I can find a long enough piece of wire I will try a direct line from the battery to the coil but it does seem as though it's working until it gets to the distributor, doesn't it?
