All 71s, except the last month of production got the early calipers. The late calipers started at chassis 311 2 268 738. VW doesn't do this, but I like to break down the VINs like this: 311 2 185 256 for the late (70-73) 10-digit VIN. Probably made around March- April of '71. or 368 117 575 for the middle (65-69) 9-digit VIN. Early cars were just numbered sequentially from 1 in '61 to 483592 at the end of '64, so the VIN itself doesn't tell us anything. -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
