My wife's Fastback (before it got converted to AT) had a bad 1st and reverse in it when I bought it back in 1989. I used a later single side cover bug trans to replace the OE trans. The OE trans had 4.12:1 final gearing, while the replacement had 3.88:1. I noticed that the engine didn't seem to turn as high a RPM as it did with the old trans, but it was a little harder to get it going (but nothing compared to 2nd gear take offs). The swing axles used different gearing than the IRS cars did. I believe it was 4.25: or 4.37:1. Or these were the different gearings between a bug and a t-3. >How different are the gear ratios, and what effect would that have on using >the "wrong" transmission? I don't think it would be that bad, since up to 73 they used the same final drive ratio. > Would using a T3 transaxle in a T1 be an "upgrade"? Not necessarily. >How bad would it really be to use a T1 tranny in a T3? (I ask >out of curiosity as I have a few spare T1 trannys)... Like I mentioned earlier, I've been using a later bug trans in my t-3 since 1991. If anything, I think it gives me slightly better fuel economy. : ) If using a bug trans though, keep the t-3 hockey stick and nose cone. This way you don't have to chase down a front trans mount for a different car. I hope this helps.
