How different are the gear ratios, and what effect would that have on using the "wrong" transmission?
I had a friend who did this once, and he noticed that the engine speed in his square seemed higher on the highway than he was used to. I think the biggest effect would be more engine noise inside the car, but there's probably some negative effect to the gas mileage.
The numbers are all in the various Bentley manuals, but I don't think any of them are more than 5% different.
