	You can try to score a used Beetle transmission (of the right 
year) and just throw that bad boy in.  I got one for $15 when my '71 
Square's tranny started making noise; when it finally crapped out, I 
spent another $20 or whatever on a new input shaft seal and seal 
puller tool (worth its weight in gold, btw) and I was back in 
business.  Took a day or a weekend, iirc.  Maybe you can do something 
similar?
