I'm not sure when the red caps were introduced. They weren't there by '68, but they were by 71. Either there were 2 different caps in 68, both black, or they both got the same cap. I don't know. > Of course, the black will do if > (a) you never load up your Square - what I would call an unfulfilled Square ;-) > or (b) never have a flat. Or if the cap is broken, as most are by now, such that the regulator function no longer works. ;-) Speaking of flats: I can't remember the last time I had a flat in one of my squarebacks. I know I had one in 1974, but there might have been another in there somewhere. OTOH, I've now had at least 5 punctures fixed in various tires from our Taurus, which we've had for about 7 years. I actually had 2 in one day! I remember the '74 flat because I had volunteered to drive my squareback to carry spare wheels for a bigtime bicycle race nearby. It was a beautiful course west of here, about 22 miles around, extremely hilly and nicely wooded. My job was to follow the leaders in order to give them support if one of them flatted or had mechanical trouble, but on the second lap I (!!!) got a flat. I swapped in my spare and was back on course in about 15 minutes, but I had to drive like crazy to try to catch up with the riders. As luck would have it, one of them, a friend of mine, had flatted and had been impatiently standing beside the road waiting for me. I was greeted with, "Where have you been??!!" He was distraught, but understood instantly when I answered, "I had a flat." Quite an ironic moment, which both of us understood instantly. And THAT's why I'll always remember THAT flat tire. ;-) -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
