Muir seems to have been a minimalist and just didn't think there was any reason why a driver shouldn't be expected to understand his car well enough to manage his own choke. Personally, I think his attitude toward the choke is rather odd, since he didn't seem to have the same negative attitude toward FI. I guess it was just one of his quirks.
