[T3] Overrevving an automatic

Is it poosible to overrev an automatic and damage it?

I was out driving today, and going up a hill. It seemed to be straining 
a bit, so I tried to downshift to 2nd. I decelerated before doing this, 
but even so, the revs went sky high. It only stayed like that for a 
second or so, before I immediately put it back in third.

Is it possible that I could have damaged something? The reason I ask is 
that there seemed to be a new noise after that, but it's possible that 
it was just because I was listening very carefully for new noises after 
this happened.
