Re: [T3] Steering box or Steering damper

I wonder if this could be caused by the steering box cover bolts being not
quite tight enough? I could imagine a case where these would be tight enough to
hold the cover still most of the time, but extreme force might move the cover
to the other extreme.

That is one thing I haven't checked. After I noticed the bolts loose on my '71, I put it on my list of things to check for my '65, when I get it out of the shed.

There's also an adjustment in the top cover. The locknut for that screw would
have to be tight, but I think that if that were a bit loose it would work
completely loose and give play all the time.

I have checked that, and that was fine. I did do some adjustments on that when I had the fuel tank out at one stage.

I can't imagine the shaft coupling splines ever getting loose enough to cause
such a problem, as all the ones I ever see here are so tight that I can't even
get them apart even after the clamp bolt is completely out.

Yes, I pulled the short end off and inspected the splines, and they didn't look like they were slipping, but the way it moves seems like just the right amount to be slipping on them.

I think I did replace the steering box when I first got the car, but I can't remember exactly why. I do remember that I found the adjustment on the top cover was screwed right in, so much that the nut was just sitting on there, there weren't enough threads exposed to put the nut on.
