I didn't always run the clamps either until I polished the inside of
my
yellow fastys fan housing to help increase airflow and wound it up to
6500rpm. Made a horrible noise, some light knocking type sounds and a
lot of
vibrations as the fan proceeded to destroy the boot. Some of it
stayed in
the fan as well. Lots of the pieces melted to the cylinder fins as
the motor
was hot when I did this. Made for a real mess and I pulled the motor
out and
down to a longblock to clean all the shredded and melted rubber. I
used both
clamps from that point on. :-D
This same thing happened to me on the first leg of my trip to Parma. I
had driven Sophy around a 1000 miles before leaving for Parma the first
week of August. Didnt have any clamps on the boot and had not had a
problem. I think it was a combination of the hot early august weather
and the long high speed run that softened the boot enough that it came
off the body side and was sucked into the fan. It ground a good piece
of the boot into little pieces.
I only noticed anything when she started to run hot at stops in town.
As long as I kept the RPMs up she was fine. Turns out that not only
was I now sucking in hot air off the exhaust, the sucked in boot was
blocking half the fan opening.
I repaired the boot at my Dad's place with some coat hangers and duct
tape and bailing wire for a rear clamp. Made it all the way to Parma
and back with that repaired boot. Picked up another one on the trip
and installed it when I got back home.
I have to agree with Jim and Patrick. Make sure you have at least the
rear, body side boot clamp in place.
