Some play in the drive gear is normal.

The mechanical advance should snap back smartly as soon as you release it.

Pull off your rotor and look at the top of the shaft. There is a felt plug 
there. Drip about 3 drops of engine oil on that plug and let it soak in. Check 
the shaft again in about 3 days. If it's fine, add another drop once a year and 
it will stay fine. Otherwise I can rebuild it and correct this.
