[T3] turn signal/steering column

Quick turn signal question:

When I use my turn signal to the left sometimes it works, sometimes it goes
really fast(like a bulb is burnt out). When I turn it to the right it only
works if I hold the arm in between on and off.

When I turn the hazards on, all the lights seem to work fine.

This leads me to believe that the problems are in the turn signal switch on
the steering column. Is this something you usually replace or can it be
taken apart and cleaned. I don't know if this is related or not, but the
steering column is kind of loose, like I can wiggle it up and down. My
mechanic said there is some bracket or something missing, and he is trying
to find one, but I don't think he is looking too hard.

I am wondering if the loose bracket caused a problem with the wiring...

Part of the reason I am asking is I just noticed someone is parting out a
'71 squareback-so I thought this might be a good time to get some
replacement parts...

Thanks for any suggestions...
