This is exactly why I do not change my speed when a squirrel comes out in front of me. I believe they have everything timed perfectly to dart inbetween my wheels, or if they realize that they're not going to make it, to turn back around and go back to the shoulder. If I slam on the brakes, it messes up their timing and they're much more likely to be killed by misjudging how much time and space they have...
