I think after you have been around this list a while, you will find that there are both types. they are refered to as Lightside, and Darkside. (refering for Star Wars.) You can't get mush darker than Brian Fye's mid-engined, 2300cc Type3 roadster. Or Toby's 2 liter with a 5 speed trans. Me, I have worked on these T-3's since the early '60's, and enjoy them very much. Currently, my '71 FB automatic is completely stock. My '66 FB is in the process of getting an engine rebuild and an upgrade to dual port heads, with dual carbs. Dual carbs were stock on it original. As for lowering it, I think Gravity has lowered it about as much as I care to have it for the type of gravel road driving I do. As for the blue coils. Yes, they do put out a hotter spark. but at a cost of higher current draw on the system. The newer ones are not near as good as the old originals, and besides, unless you going high performance, they are not needed. The 009 distributor, kind of the same. The originals from back in the '60's gave better performance, with the right carb/carbs. The ones that are produced today, don't have the advance curves that the originals had. The original 009 dist. had a cast iron housing, not aluminum. In the past 40 years, I have probably done about every "Darkside" thing to a VW that you can think of, including an L-Gas dragster, a '60 Bug with a Porsche engine, to a T-2 single cab with a 300hp Chevy mid-engine, but I always come back to stock. Yes, I dream that maybe someday, I would like to put a W8 engine in a T-3, but for right now it is just something to occupy my mind. -- Russ Wolfe '66 FB MT '71 FB AT '65 Bug (not running) russw@classicvw.org http://www.classicvw.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
