In most rebuild kits it is either a brass or aluminium washer. I think they give you a 1 & 1.5mm washer in the kit. From memory you should install the 1.5mm.

The other thing is- there are two types of needle valve. Some have a
ball bearing in the end of the shaft, and need a thicker washer, and
the ones with the solid shaft take the thinner washer. It is only the
original valves that I have seen with the ball though.

Is it possible that you guys are talking about the float valve? The needle
valve is a different part.
