I recall (? 1977) following Haynes advice to undo the big upper heat exchanger nuts and the lower stub joint to remove the muffler. It's not possible! Well, it is if you trim a sliver off the lower part of the heat exchanger stub so the muffler pivots upwards a bit - d'oh. Of course, now I know you undo the manifold nuts and pull off the upper heat exchangers with the muffler. Borrowing experience from others is the job of a manual - one of the problems with Haynes is it was originally written without the support of VW, who at the time were very much against home and non-franchised mechanics, to guarantee only their factory trained mechanics would get to work on them.
