The end play is set by the ball bearing, and I assume that a small amount is 
normal. Of course you would have to check this with the large axle nut torqued, 
because that removes non-bearing play from the system.

Side play would be mostly set by the roller bearing and you could probably feel 
a little bit.

I doubt if you have anything to worry about unless you had a bearing actually 
fail in there, damaging the housing in the diagonal arm.
