Unless you want a detailed explanation, I'll put it simply...
A european or German Squareback is a Variant.
Even today if you were to purchase a Passat wagon in Germany you would be
getting what would be labeled a Passat Variant.

Variant = Squareback...or today...Stationwagen

sort of like

Saloon = Sedan
Cabriolet = Convertable
