I consider they are very practical - excellent in snow and soft ground, and carry a good load which can be balanced front/rear. Mine has rubber mats which can be easily wiped clean if muddy, as can the seats. I have my own cushion attached, so maybe I'm happy with my comfort, and the front seats are surprisingly good even on long journeys - not good for rallying maybe, but OK for mature driving. My kids say the back is uncomfortable - I don't care and they don't usually travel in there now. ;-) If there's a more cost effective car on the road, please tell me what it is. It's got to carry up to half a ton of materials at up to 80mph with acceptable acceleration and decent brakes, and be reliable, with servicing you can do yourself cheaply. Compare the cost of the filters for a modern car even if they are changed infrequently with the couple of gaskets we use. I wonder how reliable all those electrical items will be at 10 years old - there's a lot of problems with VW electric windows even at 2 or 3 years old. Again I say depreciation and loss of interest on the money invested (or interest charged on a loan) is the big difference. It knocks everything else into the shade, except maybe the friendship that results from running a classic, and you don't get that from a modern car. But it's love and driving pleasure that stops me selling it, now I could afford a second modern car. Hey, isn't it good to be typing about old VWs while listening to the Glastonbury Festival broadcast - very hippy-like, but not as muddy here. Dave.
