Is your rotor laying at the side of the engine compartment? SP wires
disconnected? If you have both spark and gas, then it's pretty hard not to get
at least SOME response....

Have you checked the resistance of the rotor, Jim's comment reminded me of the time my '63 Beetle started running funny. The next day it wouldn't start at all, it turns out the resistor in the rotor had gone bad.
