Well, thats just it, you CANT just replace it... there have never been any repro beams or beam parts for Type 3's and when the beam was avail from the dealer it was $515!! The front end is inherantly adjustable, this isnt at all like a beetle beam.... read through the chapter in Bentley and it will give you a good overview. No way to tell what is bad in it till you get it apart, if it wasnt lowered for too many miles or was carefully driven you may be OK. One of the reasons Im such a vocal opponent to front end mods is that none of the internal beam stuff is available, if you break it your only solution is to fine another good beam, which is possible but getting harder each year. In the Northeast, forget it! 15 years ago you couldnt find a beam that wasnt rusted out in the junkyard.
