Dual port/dual carb type 3 engines all came with the earlier exhaust system from '67 thru '71. I don't think anyone ever complained about their performance in that state. There's a heavy bias here for the larger '72-3 muffler/tailpipe, but I don't know if it is truly justified. I don't know that anyone has really done a side by side test that could be called scientific, and for all I know, the larger muffler may have just been something which, together with fueling changes and the reduction in compression ratio, improved NOX exhaust emissions. It's possible, and it certainly seems likely, that the later system might allow for more power, but that would probably require rejetting a bit to take advantage of the (presumed) lower backpressure. It's also possible, that this advantage, while obvious, just isn't true. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
