Thanks for all the feedback... rattling problem solved! A local air-cooled
mechanic had a good used fan "in stock". I figured that having my fan
welded and balanced would cost as much or more than the $20 I had to lay
down for another.
According to the Clymer manual, the torque for the bolt is 28-36 ft. lbs.,
not as much as I had anticipated. Everything is re-assembled and life is
good (and quiet.
